Who We Are
New Horizon Humane Society Inc is a small team of volunteers working to save the lives of companion animals Cats/Dogs etc. We are a foster-based group, meaning these wonderful volunteers house our rescued animals in their own homes! We do not have a facility where all the animals stay, which means you don't meet everyone at once. We will set an appointment and the foster moms (and dads!) will welcome you into their home to meet the adoptable cat/dog that you are interested in. We do occasionally hold adoption events in town, where you may see a larger population of our adoptable animals at one time. Keep watch for our events to be listed!
New Horizon Humane Society was born from an emergent situation that happened to the founder of the group. Here is his story, that has become our story and our mission.
It all began on a Wednesday afternoon in February of 2021. Our founder Miguel had to go to the emergency room for a diabetic ulcer, and was quickly told he had to be admitted to the hospital as well as be sent to Grand Rapids for this
admittance. Miguel has no family in the area and is a paraplegic that lives on Social Security Disability. He has his fur babies that mean everything to him, and he knew he had to find a place for them to be safe and cared for while he was going to be away. His only option was to contact his local veterinarian and place his babies in the emergency boarding they provide. Miguel was in the hospital 8 days and went through an amputation. In that time the boarding bill was accumulating. With the help and support of people in his community a Go-Fund Me page was set up and the money he needed to get his babies home was able to be paid. Since that experience Miguel has seen a need for people in the same or similar situation needing help to care for their fur babies and in many cases their only family/companion. Which is what brought to life New Horizon Humane Society!
Our mission is to provide no income, low-income individuals, and families with the resources necessary to be able to keep their fur babies safe, happy, healthy, and at home with them instead of having to be abandoned, given away or put into shelters. All those scenarios can have awfully bad outcomes.
Everyday no income and low-income individuals and families struggle with how they are going to take care of themselves let alone their beloved fur babies. We want to be the ones that lesson the worry for them and show the love and compassion not only to the human, but the animals that depend on us to do the right things for them.
